Thermal Fluctuations of Induced Fermion Number

چکیده

We analyze the phemomenon of induced fermion number at finite temperature. At finite temperature, the induced fermion number 〈N〉 is a thermal expectation value, and we compute the finite temperature fluctuations, (∆N) = 〈N〉 − 〈N〉. While the zero temperature induced fermion number is topological and is a sharp observable, the finite temperature induced fermion number is generically nontopological, and is not a sharp observable. The fluctuations are due to the mixing of states inherent in any finite temperature expectation value. We analyze in detail two different cases in 1 + 1 dimensional field theory: fermions in a kink background, and fermions in a chiral sigma model background. At zero temperature the induced fermion numbers for these two cases are very similar, but at finite temperature they are very different. The sigma model case is generic and the induced fermion number is nontopological, but the kink case is special and the fermion number is topological, even at finite temperature. There is a simple physical interpretation of all these results in terms of the spectrum of the fermions in the relevant background, and many of the results generalize to higher dimensional models.

Nontopological finite temperature induced fermion number.

We show that while the zero temperature induced fermion number in a chiral sigma model background depends only on the asymptotic values of the chiral field, at finite temperature the induced fermion number depends also on the detailed shape of the chiral background. We resum the leading low temperature terms to all orders in the derivative expansion, producing a simple result that can be interp...

Majorana fermions in pinned vortices

Exploiting the peculiar properties of proximity-induced superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator, we propose a device, which allows the creation of a Majorana fermion inside the core of a pinned Abrikosov vortex. The relevant Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations are studied analytically. We demonstrate that in this system the zero-energy Majorana-fermion state is separated by a lar...

Quantum criticality in the cubic heavy-fermion system CeIn3-xSnx.

We report a comprehensive study of CeIn3-xSnx (0.55<or=x< or=0.8) single crystals close to the antiferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP) at xc approximately 0.37 by means of the low-temperature thermal expansion and Grüneisen parameter. This system represents the first example for a cubic heavy fermion in which TN can be suppressed continuously down to T=0. A characteristic sign change of ...

SU(2)-Invariant Spin Liquids on the Triangular Lattice with Spinful Majorana Excitations

We describe a new class of spin liquids with global SU(2) spin rotation symmetry in spin 1/2 systems on the triangular lattice, which have real Majorana fermion excitations carrying spin S = 1. The simplest translationally-invariant mean-field state on the triangular lattice breaks time-reversal symmetry and is stable to fluctuations. It generically possesses gapless excitations along 3 Fermi l...

Field-induced quantum fluctuations in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCu2Ge2

Quantum-mechanical fluctuations in strongly correlated electron systems cause unconventional phenomena such as non-Fermi liquid behavior, and arguably high temperature superconductivity. Here we report the discovery of a field-tuned quantum critical phenomenon in stoichiometric CeCu(2)Ge(2), a spin density wave ordered heavy fermion metal that exhibits unconventional superconductivity under ≃10...
